Jonathan Newhouse is the Chairman of the Board of Condé Nast, a global media company which publishes Vogue, Vanity Fair, Gentlemen’s Quarterly, The New Yorker and many other magazines around the world in addition to producing more than 100 websites.
Newhouse was appointed Condé Nast Chairman of the Board in April 2019 following a career of nearly 30 years as Chairman and Chief Executive of Condé Nast International, the arm of the media company responsible for its activities outside the US. He grew Condé Nast’s footprint from 7 markets, centered in Western Europe, to 31 markets around the globe. Under his direction, Condé Nast launched editions of Vogue in China, Russia, Japan, India, Korea, Mexico, Turkey, Holland, the Middle East and Ukraine, among other countries, and established Gentlemen’s Quarterly (GQ), Vanity Fair, Glamour, Wired, Tatler and Condé Nast Traveller as global brands. He expanded the company’s activities into websites, social media, video, restaurants, events and education.
Newhouse was born March 1952 in the US. He has lived in London since 1994 and added British citizenship in 2004.
He began his career in the 1970s in the newspaper industry. His first job was newspaper press operator. He worked as a reporter and editor before moving to the magazine industry in 1980. He served as Executive Vice President of The New Yorker and publisher of Details prior to taking on an international position for Condé Nast.
Newhouse was decorated as an Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 2008.
